Farmhouse Addition
Adding new spaces to older buildings can be tricky, but this addition to an old style farm house in the Champagne valley is a great example of how adding the value of extra space doesn't necessarily mean detracting from the beautiful character of an existing building. The clients brief was to create an additional living space, a dining room and sitting area that would look out on the beautiful mountain views which were not really being taken advantage of in the existing house. The addition needed to be sensitive to the existing character of the house while fulfilling the brief.

The addition included a large new sitting room with space for the clients beautiful 8 seat dining room table. The room faces onto the mountain so the folding stacking doors allow the space to completely open up towards the view.
This elevation of the house had direct views to the escarpment, the traditional small windows did not make the most of this aspect.
The clients are avid gardeners and this back veranda created a great space to store tools and work on projects. I love the way that matching the column style of the existing house and re-purposing the old steel window makes it feel like this space has always been a part of the house
The addition of the planter beds around the new areas softens the edges and allows for a great space to plant vegetables

The windows on all sides and high ceiling create a beautiful open space that comfortably holds the large furniture pieces without feeling cramped.
The open space feels part of the garden outside and, especially with the stacking doors open, really blurs the line between interior and exterior. You can enjoy the outdoors in any weather in this space.
